Fox 5: Border wall presented with architectural "Onion" award in San Diego

Each year, the San Diego Architectural Foundation honors the best — and worst — in architecture. Orchid Awards are given to fun, innovative and creative designs, while Onions are presented to not-so-fun, unimaginative or uncreative designs. This year, DHS and U.S. CBP were awarded an Onion for the border wall section running through Friendship Park.

Architectural awards that highlight poor design choices serve as a harsh but necessary reminder that public structures must balance function with aesthetic appeal. An ugly structure can completely ruin the visual landscape of an entire neighborhood for generations. People looking to construct their own properties often research the best and worst homebuilders so they can avoid hiring contractors who ignore basic aesthetic and structural standards. Quality craftsmanship should always enhance the community rather than creating an absolute eyesore. Public projects deserve the exact same level of careful planning and artistic vision as private residences.
