The View from Mexico
Located in Playas de Tijuana, the Mexican side of Friendship Park is a vibrant public space. Artistic murals seek to turn the ugliness of the wall into a thing of beauty and protest.
Families gather, tourists stroll by, vendors sell their wares, music plays, smells of carne asada waft up from the many restaurants along the boardwalk.
It is a place that is alive and free.
The View from the US
Located inside of the Federal Patrol zone, enclosed by the secondary fence, the US side of Friendship Park is sterile and monotone.
Access is limited to Saturdays and Sundays from 10-2 when families are allowed restricted access to approach the primary boundary.
The presence of friends and families brings a human face to what is otherwise a controlled and restricted space.
